What's happening on Tour & around campsite.
Recent Weather

2011 began as a wetter season than normal but now in June it has reverted back to what we remember as normal. The Spring coming should be a very good wildflower season with good conditions over the last two years setting up healthy and vigorus growth in the vegetation. The animals are breeding very well and it is an opportunity to see the inland as good as is possible.

Wildlife Events

Last season we had 111 species of birds recorded from the dining room from September 09 until April !0. This season has not started so well as it has been so wet and there is so much food in the bush, the birds are quite scattered. This is still the same now in June 11, which is normal for mid winter. The red kangaroos are returning to the area in large numbers and nature needs more to, eat the high grass the good seasons have produced. Some exciting news is that we are now visiting a colony of wild koalas near Port Lincoln as the first thing we do on our tours. These are so easy to see and photograph as they are in low trees..

Wombat News

The Southern Hairy Nosed Wombats are so well fed this season that they are quite hard to see, as well the grass is very high.

Wombats will start to show again in day light in April- May in the late afternoon.

Sea Lions
At Baird Bay most of the 28 new pups born since June last year provided us with an amazing season of fun, we do not visit them in June July and Augustbut I am sure they will be excited to see us again on the 1st of September.
SwagonsWAGONSswWAGONS

At this moment we are rebuilding an old horse drawn wagon to become a Swagon at the camp. This will be a platform for sleeping under the stars in a swag, or it can in an instant be a covered wagon. It will have a small deck, the swag will be a queen double mattress with a canvas envelope as with a traditional swag. This will be a nice experience and also a cheaper option for single travellers. The Swagon is almost ready, a few minor things to do and we can post a photo on this site. www.kirkhopeaaviation.com

Telescope

We have now an 8 inch computer controlled telescope at the camp. The night sky is very clear and bright at Kangaluna so we are able to use a large magnification on the telescope to view objects. Saturn, Jupiter and the moon are the favourites because of their features.

It is a great surprise to find that it is often possible to take a photo of one of these objects with your small digital cameras. The shots on the photo gallery were taken with a small camera through the eye piece.
